STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY - With some of the coldest temperatures of the season moving in, you can't help but wonder, what about those folks who have to work in freezing conditions?
As the snow continues to fall and temperatures drop fast, the idea of staying inside and staying warm is at the top of most people's list.
But what's it like for those folks working during these cold conditions? Just ask David Runyan.
"Definitely, when it's snowing, I always have people telling me to drive slowly, but they're definitely glad they didn't have to walk out in the cold," Runyan said.
They're hot, fresh and made to order and Runyan delivers them.
"it's a little bit of a pain when you get a delivery to a dorm or something and you have to wait outside for people to come get the pizza," he said.
When the temperature drops, Bobby Schul says that's when business picks up.
"When it's really, really cold out, usually there's a lot more deliveries than there is in house because people don't want to walk on the sidewalk when it's that cold," Schul said.
It's not just the unsafe driving conditions that make this job a challenge, as a former delivery driver himself, Schul says the cold winds make it difficult, too.
"When it's cold out, it kind of sucked when you have to wait for peopel to come to the door and you're getting the wind blowing on you," he said. "You're sitting there shivering, waiting to get back into your car. It's nice and warm in there."
So while you're enjoying that hot pizza, just remember the person who delivered it to you.
"We go through the bad weather, just like the mailman and you know, we appreciate tips for our hard work for you," Schul said.
If you do have to work outside in the cold weather, be sure to dress warmly. Make sure your ears and hands are covered. Limit your time outdoors and stay dry, as wet clothing chills the body quickly. Take care when traveling. Listen to travel advisories and keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent your gas line from freezing. Make sure you have food and water, along with blankets in your car for emergencies.
Most of all, stay cautious out on those roadways.
