VFW Renovated in 48 Hours

PATTON, CAMBRIA COUNTY - Like an army, Home Depot employees came from across Central Pennsylvania to help renovate VFW post 779.

"I think we're very unique because the pictures on the wall," said Catherine Nagle as she pointed to all the pictures from veterans of WWII. "They couldn't be replaced if something happened to them."

Nagle is married to a retired veteran, as a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, she's spent a lot of time in the Patton VFW building.

"We have dances and parties here," she said. "Our Christmas party is coming up soon."

Now those dances and parties will be a little nicer.

More than 40 Home Depot workers have been hard at work renovating the building.

"We've been painting all the way around," said Carrie Ruszkoski, a Johnstown Home Depot cashier.

"We built some cabinets to replace the ones that were bad, and we did some cutting so they could put the drop ceiling in."

The work was paid for by a $10,000 grant.

It's part of Home Depot's Foundation for Veterans, and it's all home depot workers installing ceilings and painting walls.

"This is how we can give back," said Ruszkoski. "There's not much we can do for them and they do so much for us, so any chance we get we volunteer our name to go help them."

Home Depot says the renovations will make the building more efficient, possibly cutting electricity and heating bills in half.

While those future savings excite Nagle, it's the past that keeps her smiling.

"A lot of them passed away a long time ago," she continued. "So they would have no idea about Home Depot, but they would be very excited about all this, and we'll keep it going."
