A new federal report shows that one in 5 American adults or 45-and- a-half-million people, had mental illness in the past year.
The 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health collects data through face-to-face interviews with 65,750 people in their homes.
It found that the rate of mental illness was more than twice as high among those 18 to 25 (29.8 percent) as among those 50 and older. Adult women also were more likely than men to say they'd had a mental illness in the past year
