STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY - The weather season is upon us and there are some safety tips to make sure that not only you, but your car, too, are prepared for the season.

Be sure to check your vehicle fluids and ensure that they are all completely full. Perhaps one of the most important fluid to check is for your windshield wipers. Also make sure your windshield wipers don't streak and consider installing winter wiper blades.

Make sure your heater and defroster are working properly and all of your lights are working. Check to be sure tires are fully inflated and have sufficient tread.

Keep your gas tank at least half full.

Pack a winter weather emergency kit and keep it in the trunk of your car in case you end up stranded during a storm. The following items should be included in your kit:

  • Flashlight and batteries
  • Battery-operated radio
  • Jumper cables
  • Cell phone and charger
  • Snow shovel
  • Matches and candles
  • First Aid supplies
  • Extra warm clothing and gloves
  • Blanket
  • Ice Scraper
  • Sand
  • Bottled Water
  • Non-perishable food
  • Anything else you may need to accommodate family travel, including special medication, pet food, baby supplies, etc.

If you do need to venture out during winter weather, always be sure to wear your seat belt, drive extra slow for slippery conditions, avoid sudden starts and stops and be sure to keep an eye out for black ice that could cause hazardous driving conditions.
