Only One Colonoscopy in a Lifetime

By: Charlotte Ames
Updated: November 6, 2012
People whose first colonoscopy comes back negative may not have to have another one. Currently, a colonoscopy is recommended every ten years.

But a new study in the Annals of Internal Medicine finds other kinds of follow ups -- including blood tests and CT scans - have the same survival rates with fewer complications and a lower cost.

Other experts argue most people prefer to endure a colonoscopy and never have colorectal cancer, than to suffer with cancer and survive.
