Updated: October 17, 2012
Researchers say they've made major progress in improving the genetic diagnosis of autism. Geisinger Medical Center was part of the team that identified 30 new genetic mutations that increase the risk for autism and similar disorders.

The scientists used data from more than 30,000 people with  what are called neuro-developmental disorders. They discovered that eighteen of these mutations are found in autism,

Researchers say all of these mutations can now be used to diagnose patients and could lead to earlier and more personalized treatment.

The research team included Geisinger,  Emory University, UCLA, and Yale University.
