Updated: June 20, 2012
Leading  researchers unveiled potential cancer breakthroughs this week at an International Biotechnology Conference in Boston. A new lung cancer drug and three new treatments for melanoma are among the therapies highlighted at the event.

WTAJ spokes via satellite with Dr. Margaret Foti, the CEO of the American Association for Cancer Research. She said new therapies for kidney cancer and leukemia are also in the pipeline.

"We can cure cancer. We can't cure all cancers, but we are really making a difference in some of the more difficult ones this year," Dr. Foti said.

She predicts that more information will soon be released  about a new drug that extends the lives of lung cancer patients. Dr. Foti says  the latest therapies are personalized treatments that  target the specific mutation behind a patient's cancer.

She is this year's recipient of the Biotech Humanitarian Award for her efforts to improve cancer research and to build an enhanced network of cancer researchers.
