A new statewide report shows more Pennsylvania hospitals operating in the black last year, although the amount of their charity care or bad debt is increasing. The review by the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council says the number and percentage of hosptials that lost money declined in 2011.
Last year, 20% percent of hospitals were in the red, down from 24% in 2010. There's been a significant improvement since 2009 when 45% of hospitals were losing money.
In our area, Altoona Regional Health System, Clearfield Hospital, Dubois Regional Medical Center, J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, Tyrone Hospital and Windber Hospital were among the hospitals in the red, last year.
