Living a healthy lifestyle for some young people is a natural fit down on the farm.

Matt Stanton's whole family moves into the Farm Show complex each January to show their dairy cows. Matt describes the work as "fun, but it's also hard work." "You're always doing something, but it's always different, you are always outside, enjoying yourself.  I love being with animals and working with my cows." says Stanton.

Matt has spent his life on his family farm in Everett (Bedford County).  It is hard work and the animals come first. "Cows come before the work, but then the work's got to be done first too, " as Matt explains.

Matt says there's never a dull moment, and staying active is a given.

At the Farm Show, most of hard work goes into prepping the animals for their big day. He showed how clipping the cows makes them look "more frail and more dairy" to score higher with the judges.

Matt was active in both 4-H and FFA(Future Farmers of America) while in high school. He says they are two great groups to be active in if you are interested in this lifestyle.

And how about if you've never been down on the farm? Matt responds, "Stay in the city.   They could come visit anytime they like. It 'd be good for them."

Know Your BMI

FYI, your BMI is PDI.

Huh? Would you like a translation? Here it is: For your information (FYI), your body mass index (BMI) is pretty darn important (PDI).

Did you know you had a BMI? Body mass index is a calculation that uses your height and weight to estimate how much body fat you have. Too much body fat is a problem because it can lead to illnesses and other health problems. BMI, although not a perfect method for judging someone's weight, is often a good way to check on how a kid is growing.

Calculate Your BMI

The best way to determine your BMI is to have your doctor do it for you. That way, you'll know the number is accurate and your doctor can discuss the result with you. If you're interested, you also can figure out your BMI on your own.
