Philipsburg Heritage Days was started in 1998 by a group of former committee members of the Philipsburg Bi-Centennial Committee. The organizers wanted to have an annual event that would highlight the rich historic assets of the Philipsburg community.

The event will be held the week following the 4th of July and will follow the schedule established by the Arts Festival in State College, Pa. It was felt that by having the event at the same time as the Arts Festival, joint marketing could be done for both events to increase attendance.

Philipsburg Heritage Days Committee decides on a theme each year that will highlight a specific historical event in the town or recognition of various groups of organizations. In 2009, the theme is "Honoring the Past and Looking to the Future" which honors the Philipsburg Elks Lodge that is celebrating its 100Th Anniversary. Also, the Elks are embarking on a new building project after their merger with the Philipsburg Country Club. The new facility will provide the area with a modern, up to date facility that will enhance the community.

The event has grown through the years to become recognized as one of the premiere events in Central Pennsylvania. Many class reunions, family reunions, homecomings, weddings, etc. are planned around the Heritage Days celebration. Attendance has grown throughout the years and has been estimated at well over 15,000 for the five day event.
