PETERSBURG, HUNTINGDON - Just outside of State College, just over Pine Grove Mountain, Penn State's Shaver's Creek Environmental Center is home to 23 raptors.

Shaver's Creek cares for injured birds, but it also serves a purpose as a learning center.  It gives college students the chance to work with wildlife, and it gives children and the public the chance to come learn about that wildlife and even see some cool creatures up close - including a few bald eagles, a golden eagle, a red-tailed hawk, a couple great-horned owls, and many more birds.

Program Director Doug Steigerwalt has been working with the birds for many years.  He says that you can learn a lot from them.

The birds that live at Shaver's Creek were injured in some way.  One of the Great-Horned Owls was found after it had flown into a barbed wire.  The Golden Eagle was severely injured when it flew into some power lines.

All of the birds at Shaver's Creek were injured so badly that they can't be released back into the wild, so the workers and interns care for them and try to give them the best life possible.

They also use these birds to go to different schools and events and teach people about them.  It gives people the chance to see these different birds closer then ever before.
