Reported by: Adam Paluka Tuesday, Mar 3, 2009 @04:40pm EST BELLEFONTE, CENTRE COUNTY - 30 more traffic signals in Centre County have transitioned from using incandescent bulbs to energy saving LED technology.
The technology cuts energy use by as much as 80 percent.
That energy reduction could cut the electric bills in seven Centre County municipalities who participated in the program. Those seven municipalities include State College, Bellefonte, and Philipsburg boroughs. The LED technology was brought to the area through a partnership with SEDA COG, a council of governments for eleven counties across Pennsylvania. Megan Elder, from SEDA COG, said it was important to replace the traffic lights sooner rather than later. "In January of 2010 most of the utilities that support Centre County will be uncapping, and all customers should expect to see about a 35 percent increase in their utility bills overnight," she said. LED lights have another benefit, they last five times longer than traditional bulbs. |
