Reported by: Kevin Valentine Tuesday, Jul 7, 2009 @10:56am EDT WASHINGTON, D.C. - The FDA has ordered a nationwide recall of products that contain powdered milk.
Items involved in the recall range from a milkshake powder found to be tainted with salmonella last month to instant oatmeal breakfast foods and even some hot chocolate mixes that consumers only need to add hot water to. Some Kroger popcorn toppings also contain the tainted dried milk and have been recalled. The FDA says salmonella was found at a Plainview, Minnesota milk cooperative plant which has now voluntarily recalled all instant non-fat dried milk, whey protein, fruit stabilizers and thickening agents produced over the past two years. The products were sold to food manufacturers and distributors. This latest recall is in addition to one announced on July 2nd by CPI Foods of Dallas, Texas. The company was collecting about 15-thousand packets of non fat dry milk that have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella. The FDA says no illnesses have been linked to the contamination but the recalls are expected to spread as the questionable powdered milk is discovered in the food system.
