Reported by: Adam Paluka Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @04:23pm EST STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY – For the Penn State Football Team, there is nothing better than beating the Ohio State Buckeyes. Fans also revel in defeating the team from Columbus. Students rioted in downtown State College last year after the Lions’ win.
For Buckeye fans, there is no question they want their team to beat the Nittany Lions, but there is another team they look forward to defeating more. The Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State Buckeyes have one of the most heated rivalries in all of college sports. They have been playing for more than 100 years. Penn State, which began playing in the Big Ten in 1994, does not have that history with the Scarlet and Gray. However fans think this rivalry is getting more heated with each passing year. “Obviously Ohio State’s biggest rival is Michigan. We're just new to the Big Ten, and we're getting our rivalries established, but it's there. It's getting to that level,” PSU Freshman Brian Avison said. Ohio State Fan Dale Briggs agrees, “(Our)biggest rival no doubt is Michigan, close second is right here at State College.” “It’s a huge rivalry for us, and we know the Michigan/Ohio State rivalry’s much stronger, but I think after what we did to them last year in Columbus, they definitely want payback from us this year, so it's a pretty big game,” Marilyn Binkley, PSU Class of ’04, said. It is not just last year; the Nittany Lions defeated the Buckeyes in 2005 too. The last time Michigan beat the Buckeyes was in 2004. |
