Reported by: Adam Paluka Monday, Nov 2, 2009 @05:23pm EST STATE COLLEGE, CENTRE COUNTY - Ferguson Township resident Stacy Parks Miller said it is easy to see why voters are in her corner.
“Over the past four years we've seen really bad decision making we've seen cases implode in their faces, we've seen really puzzling plea bargains it's a leadership issue, it's a management issue,” Parks Miller, a Democrat, said. Current District Attorney, Mike Madeira, who lives in Julian, said a few blunders are inevitable with such a heavy case load. “In spite of the five or six or seven cases that keep getting brought up by my opponent as the ‘See here, this is the mistake.’ Let's talk about the fact that we handle over three thousand cases a year,” The Republican said. Madeira tips his hat to a recent Congressional Quarterly rating that reported Centre County is the second safest place to live in America. “It’s always been a great place to live, but four years ago when I ran I said I wanted to keep it safe. What's actually happened is we've actually become safer than we ever have before.” Parks Miller, who worked for several years in the Clearfield County District Attorney's Office, had a different perspective. “No D.A. is Superman. The police, our quality police force, our good educational system those contribute to low crime, the District Attorney's Office job is to prosecute cases competently once they're filed.” Polls open Tuesday at 7:00 a.m., but not many people are expected to vote. Turnout for an off year election is usually around 25 percent in Centre County. |
