Reported by: Nate Potter Monday, Nov 2, 2009 @02:13pm EST Helen Curran is the meter maid in Hollidaysburg, Blair County. She's 78 years-old and has been doing this for 19 years.
"I consider myself a little like an old-fashioned street cop," said Curran as she checks on some parking meters. Curran said she enjoys her job because she gets to be outside and get exercise everyday, and she takes her job seriously. "I've given my children tickets, believe me, when they were uptown," Curran remembered laughing. She said she told them that they've got to put money in the meter. Curran remembers when they had penny meters and tickets were only $1. That was in 1990. Today, tickets are $5. She says retirement's not in site. "As long as god gives me the strength and energy to do it, I will do it. But i know when I do leave, I'll miss it." |
