Reported by: Erin Calandra Thursday, Aug 20, 2009 @06:11pm EDT LOGAN TOWNSHIP, BLAIR COUNTY - Penn State Altoona is welcoming 4,000 students back to school this weekend.
About 900 students moved into dorms Thursday. Faculty, staff and upperclassmen were on hand to help out, but not every student can live on campus. The overflow usually rents homes and apartments in the surrounding communities. The student population has caused some problems with residents in the past. A little over 3,000 students in Altoona have to find off campus housing. Most residents I talked to say they have a love, hate relationship with the students moving into their neighborhoods. They say they're great for the most part, but there are a few who make things hard for everyone. Thousands of students are pouring into the neighborhoods surrounding the Penn State Altoona campus. One of those areas is the Wehnwood neighborhood. The Logan Township police say they saw more alcohol related problems in that neighborhood last year than they have ever before and this year they plan on stopping it before starts. Students moving into the neighborhood say that's not a problem. They say they are here to focus on school. Some people have lived in these homes for 30 plus years and they've seen a lot of changes over time. They say the neighborhood is louder; there is more traffic and less parking. Most residents understand that the kids have nowhere else to go because of the lack of housing on campus. They just hope the out of town guests will behave this year so they can all live in harmony. |
