Reported by: Charlotte Ames Thursday, Oct 29, 2009 @05:37pm EDT Zerona™ is the name for a low-level laser system that targets subcutaneous fat. Unlike liposuction, no incisions are needed. The physician shines the laser at the skin on both sides of the body. The laser energy opens a tiny pore, or hole, in the fat cell’s protective membrane. This allows the contents of the fat cells to seep out of the cell and into the extracellular space (the space between the cells), where it’s eliminated by the body along with other waste materials.
A single Zerona session takes 40 minutes (20 minutes for the front of the body and 20 for the back). The manufacturer recommends six treatments spread over a two week period. Patients don’t feel any pain or side effects from Zerona and are able to immediately go back to their normal activities. Gregory Nikolaidis, M.D., Dermatologist in Round Rock, TX, says, after six sessions, the average patient is losing about three to five pounds and six inches. As long as the patient maintains a healthy diet and exercise program, the effect is permanent. However, Nikolaidis warns that if the patient starts to take in too many calories, the fat deposits will come back. In addition to the tummy, other potential areas for which the treatment can be used include the hips, thighs, back, chin, neck and arms. Zerona doesn’t work for everyone and it can’t tackle the visceral fat deposits that are deeper inside the body. In addition to melting away fat, Nikolaidis says Zerona has been shown to lower cholesterol levels by as much as 30 points.
