BEDFORD SPEEDWAYThe Bedford Speedway, is located at the Historic Bedford Fairgrounds, and has emerged as one of the oldest active speedways in the United States. The first ever race held at the Bedford Speedway was in 1936, during the Great Bedford County Fair. There were several drivers from all across this country that participated at the Bedford Speedway during the 1930's, 40's and 50's. The path to Indy came rigth throught the speedway. Indy 500 winner Bill Holland entered victory lane during this time. Other drivers that participated at the Bedford Speedway at this time were Jimmy Bryan, the 1952 and '53 winner; Ted Horn, Paul Russo, Tommy Hinnershitz, Joie Chitwood, Duane Carter, Bill Schindler, and Buster Warke. The early races in the 1960's were part of the championship open wheel "Big Car" series, sanctioned by
the American Automobile Association. In 1961, the Indy 500, Daytona
500, and Formula One World Driving Champion Mario Andretti competed at
Bedford. The fair races came to end in the late 60's and remained that
way until 1990 when the Fair Board brought them back as one fo the
markey attractions to the Great Bedford County Fair.Since the speedways conception, people all across the land have witnessed history and many sitll love to talk about events that took place at Bedford. The
speedway is currently promoted by a trio of local businessmen: JR
Keifer, Dr. Dave Horn and Jim Maybury. Racing today is better than
ever at Bedford, with an aggressive schedule which includes the Lucas
Oil Late Model Series, World of Outlaw Late Model Series, Three State
Flyer Series, PA Possee Sprint Car Speed weeks, Appalachian Dirt Late
model Speed weeks and our weekly Friday nigth show which consist of
Late Models, 358 Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Cruisers and
4 Cylinders. |
