Students in Mrs. Evelyn Suydam’s 11th and 12th grade Physics class at Belleville Mennonite School took part in a hands-on introductory activity on Thursday, September 10 – an egg drop contest in front of all middle and high school students! The  student’s objective was to apply physics knowledge to the construction of an apparatus to protect a raw egg  that would be dropped from the top of scaffolding (approximately 40 feet) in  the school’s gymnasium, and finally to withstand the impact of the fall without breaking.  The apparatus restrictions included being as light weight as possible, not being larger than 25 cm x 25 cm and being open- able.  It was also imperative to create an apparatus that would descend the slowest because the drop time would be measured. The experiment was very engaging and helped to prepare the class for the upcoming study of free fall, speed and acceleration. First place was awarded to the team of students who's design made use of a parachute, second, to the team who used a triangle for support with balloons to slow the descend, and third, to the team who encased their box design in balloons. Congratulations to the winning team and  a job well done to everyone!
