Reported by: Carolyn Donaldson Monday, Nov 19, 2007 @05:48pm EST A million dollar initiative is designed jump start kids into thinking fitness. Too many kids are overweight and Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is offering school grants to reverse what is becoming a generation of "couch potatoes". From hula hoops to scooter carts, kids are turning upside down and heading outside all in the name of fitness At Ferndale Elementary School in Somerset County, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is backing healthy kids with $1 million dollars for schools who get fit. Highmark Spokesperson Mary Anne Papale says, "We feel that when you establish good health habits when you are young you take that into adulthood." This health insurer is trying to fill the gap in educational funding by offering 10 thousand dollar grants to qualifying schools in 49 counties here in Central Pennslvania who develop healthy programs for their students. Ferndale's Phys Ed Teacher Janet Horvath says every bit helps. "As money constraints are happening, obviously physical education isn't necessarily one of the priorities with the No Child Left Behind legislation." For Ferndale, this means expanding their outdoor Fit Trail they opened last year with similar Highmark grant money.
Each station involves a fun form of exercise and it's working. "They are very energetic, very into becoming healthy and staying that way, " says Horvath. These 10 thousand dollar school grants are now available with an open deadline. Last year over 500 schools applied for 500 thousand dollars in grant money. Highmark has doubled the amount this year and is hoping for some healthy results.
