  • St. Francis Additions

LORETTO, CAMBRIA COUNTY ---  The school year may be a month away, but an area university is gearing up for the return of students.

College kids returning to Saint Francis University next month will be seeing some new buildings on campus.

Construction is moving along quickly for three new buildings at the school.  Athletes will get to use brand new work out equipment and locker rooms at the DeGol field house.

Just down the street from the football field and field house there's going to be a new home for the Franciscans who work at the university.  The friary will have ten suites. It’s expected to be completed by the beginning of September.

In the middle of campus will be the new DiSepio Institute for Rural Health and Wellness.  The institute will have classrooms, and a research center.  Students will also be able to use the new rehabilitation center, strength and conditioning facilities and cardio equipment.

There's also construction right in front of the DeSepio institute.  That's where geothermic wells have been put in place to help the school go green and save some green.

"Our geothermal wells are completely done being dug for the building.  They will be for the DeSepio Building.  They will heat and cool the building.  The temperature underground is 60 degrees year round, so they will heat the building in the wintertime and cool the building in the summertime, which serves the green initiative on campus," Assistant Director of Marketing Amanda Stoehr said.

The geothermic wells are expected to reduce the school's energy costs by 32%.  It will also cut carbon emissions which some say are responsible for climate change by 119,000 pounds per year.
