Reported by: Nate Potter Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @02:23pm EST FORT HOOD, TEXAS - Officials said Nidal Malik Hasan, 39, a Major in the United States Army, opened fire at the Fort Hood military base, killing 12 people, wounding 30 people. Hasan worked as a military psychiatrist for years. Those who knew him said he was quiet and religious.
Hasan graduated from Virginia Tech. He worked in Washington at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center for six years before being transferred to Texas. Police removed a computer from Hasan's apartment. They also took a dumpster outside the apartment. They are looking for possible motives. Neighbors said that Hasan told them he was deploying to Iraq. Colleagues said he was angry that he was being shipped out. He was supposed to work with an Army Reserve Unit that helps soldiers deal with combat stress. Hasan was a lifelong Muslim. The manager of his apartment complex said religion was everything to him. He also said a fellow soldier keyed Hasan's car and removed a bumper sticker that said, "Allah is Love." Hasan's family released a statement calling his actions "despicable and deplorable." Hasan is an American citizen of Jordanian descent. He was born in Virginia. |
