  • 13 Dead, Gunman Still Alive
    Reported by: Nate Potter

    Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @08:00am EST

FORT HOOD, TEXAS - 13 people are dead and 31 wounded after a massacre on an army base in Texas.  The primary shooting suspect is wounded and alive, not dead as previously reported.

"Preliminary reports indicate there was a single shooter that was shot multiple times at the scene," Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said at a news conference Thursday evening.  "However, he was not killed as previously reported."

The suspect, identified as Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, opened fire at a military processing center in Fort Hood on Thursday afternoon, army officials said.

Cone said two other soldiers were detained as suspects but later released from custody.  One other person remains in custody at this time.

Hasan was shot by a civilian officer who was wounded.  Hasan is in custody and stable condition, Cone said.

Republican Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison said that Hasan appeared to be upset about his deployment to Iraq.  Hasan is believed to have used a pair of handguns in the attack.

President Obama condemned the attack as a "horrific outburst of violence."

The army base is a soldier processing center that readies troops for deployment.

Ten of the people who were killed were soldiers.  One man was a civilian police officer, working as a contractor on the base, Cone said.

It appears that Hasan shot men who were being processed for deployment.  There may have been another shooter, Cone said.

Two of the injured are in serious condition.

Fort Hood is now closed, effective immediately, according to its website.

    The investigation continues.
