Reported by: Adam Paluka Wednesday, Oct 28, 2009 @10:07pm EDT UNIVERSITY PARK, CENTRE COUNTY - Three Penn State freshman made it to the finals in the Barack Obama Health Reform Video Challenge. Steve Patrick of New Cumberland, Josie Farinelli of New Kensington and Ryan Kramer of Maryland put the video together as part of their honors English class after a Penn State Professor decided to ask her students how they felt about health care.
”Is it a right, is it a privilege, or is it a moral imperative? Because that really helps you to make a determination as to the direction you'd like to see, the direction you'd like to see this conversation go,” English Professor Diana Gruendler said. Three students answered with a 30 second video that showcases the problem of a college student graduating and not finding a job with health insurance benefits. The video was selected by the Democratic National Committee as one of 20 that could be a national ad advocating health care reform. “We're not yelling. We're not screaming. We're not telling you what to do. We're just saying this is our opinion. This is what we think is going to happen, so if you could listen to our concerns that would be great,” Josie Farinelli, one of the students who created the video, said. The students think their video caught the DNC's eye because it features college students, a group of people not commonly associated with the health care reform debate. “This is the system that we'll be living with for the rest of our lives, and I think it's really important that we are active in molding the world that we're going to live in tomorrow,” Freshman Steven Patrick said. The students spent four hours and zero dollars on the video. “I knew it was a creative idea, and I wasn't sure because it didn't really look professional and not really what you'd see on TV. Then I thought to myself, if they were looking for something professional they would have gone to an advertising firm,” Ryan Kramer, who also worked on the video, said. The students will find out if they have won after a vote by the public and a panel of expert judges. Voting on the top 20 videos opened Tuesday and the winning video will be announced November 7th.
