Kim Stewart : Age 53 : Lewistown, Mifflin County

Kim Stewart went for her regular yearly mammogram in February of 2003. It was clean, but less than a month later she found a lump. On March 21, 2003 doctors told Kim she had cancer.
She was diagnosed with DCIS (ductal carcinoma insitu) breast cancer.
 
"After a couple days of walking around in a daze I decided I was going to win this battle. My source of strength was my faith and the support of my family and friends. I had a husband, three sons and a daughter-in-law to live for. I also had a very special niece who was only 3 at the time. My best friend went with me to every appointment. My entire family blessed me with their prayers and support. I praise God everyday for their faithfulness through my battle."
 
On May 1, 2003 Kim had a mastectomy of her right breast. She did not have to go through chemo or radiation but the next two years were still very stressful.  Kim suffered severe side effects from the medication she was on to prevent a reoccurrence of breast cancer.  After praying for guidance, Kim scheduled another mastectomy for her other breast and double reconstruction. The left breast was cancer free, but Kim doesn't regret her decision. "I felt whole again."

“Breast cancer can strike anyone. I was the first in my family to be diagnosed with it. I encourage every newly diagnosed breast cancer patient to persevere. Don't feel any question is dumb. Find a doctor that you have a good rapport with. You might have to change doctors, but you will know who is the best for you.”

Kim walked in her first Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk in 2004 and was so touched by the event she eventually got her entire family involved.  She is now on the Making Strides Walk Committee. “I have walked in the rain and cold, that is how much this event means to me.  was such an awesome experience to be with other breast cancer survivors and know you are not alone in the fight. If I can help one person it is well worth my time.” Kim wants people to remember: “If God brings you to it, he will bring you through it!
