  • Tour of Pennsylvania Stops in Bedford
    Reported by: Tessa Mentus

    Thursday, Jun 26, 2008 @05:32pm EDT

BEDFORD, BEDFORD COUNTY --- Bedford served as the finish line for Stage 3 of the Tour of Pennsylvania bike race.  120 cyclists under the age of 25 are racing from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh.

This is the first year for the Tour of Pennsylvania bike race, and people in Bedford were thrilled that it stopped in their community.  They said it's bringing a boost to the town's economy this week, and it's also teaching area children a good lesson.

After pedaling 104 miles across the Pennsylvania mountains, the cyclists ended Stage 3 of 6 of the Tour of Pennsylvania in Bedford .  Waiting on their arrival didn't stop area families from having a good time.

The tour's presenter, Highmark Healthy High Five, held a Finish Line Festival today, promoting a positive message to young people.

"We really are particularly thrilled to be sponsoring the festivals because we're wanting kids to be active and to realize how much fun it can be to be physically active and lead a healthy lifestyle," Janice Seigle of Highmark said.

Highmark showed kids how to stay healthy and have fun at the same time, and the more they participated the better their chances of winning prizes.  Parents at the festival said it's a great idea, and it helped their kids see the importance of a healthy lifestyle and appreciate the cyclist's hard work.

"They're in very good shape, and it’s very difficult to do that, so it is going to be fun and that is really why we came up,” Theresa Montgomery of Bedford said.  “We didn't expect all of this, and it's just wonderful, it's organized, it's a great experience for Bedford and for all of the kids in Bedford."

Just because the Finish Line Festivals are designed to be educational, between doing push-ups, playing interactive video games, and joining group exercises… the kids didn't miss out on having fun.

"Yeah, I mean they're giving out free stuff and everything and that helps you learn about how that helps you," Austin Montgomery of Bedford said.

The festival stayed open until 6:00 p.m.  Cyclists will take off from Bedford on Friday to head for Latrobe for Stage Four of the race.  Another cool fact about the race, today's winner, James Driscoll, was riding a Cannondale bike, and those are actually made right in Bedford.
