  • Bar Forced to Close in Plymouth

    Friday, Nov 6, 2009 @06:00pm EST

More than one hundred police calls in 3 years.

That's why the district attorney's office in Luzerne County says it shut down the old Tymers Pub in Plymouth.

The DA’s office filed a temporary order to close the east main street bar until a court hearing next week.

Police place locks on the doors as the DA's office shut the bar down, making one neighbor very happy.

Bernardi Proud of Plymouth said, "We're glad they're closing that place up. Mike asks, why is that? Because it wakes us up at night with what goes on over here, two, three o'clock in the morning, and shooting too."

The DA's office is temporarily closing Old Tymers because of too much crime inside and outside the bar.

Plymouth police records show more than 100 calls to the pub in three years, including a murder in September 2008.

That's when the bar was called Bull Run Tavern.

Luzerne county district attorney Jackie Musto Carroll said, “We were told there was going to be security, there was no security and things haven't changed. It has not been a good place for this neighborhood."

But Old Tymers Pub owner Neil McMahon tells a different story.

He says his bar is targeted because of his customers.

"i'm the only bar in plymouth that serves colored people so this is definitely a racially motivated situation here. If i didn't serve black people yous wouldn't be here."

At least one longtime customer agrees with McMahon.

Frank Schoppel of Plymouth said, "There is no problem here. The problem is the people coming from out of town into the bar, you can't control that."

But Musto Carroll says this has nothing to do with race.

She says too many complaints and too much crime led to the bar's demise.

This closure could be finalized or reversed after a court hearing set for Tuesday.

In that hearing, the DA will present evidence along with the bar owner.

The owner has threatened to file a federal lawsuit, claiming this shut down is racially motivated.
