  • $6 Million Dish Network Settlement
    Reported by: Erin Calandra

    Friday, Jul 17, 2009 @11:09am EDT

A national satellite television provider is ordered to dish out nearly $6 million in a consumer protection settlement. Dish Network found themselves in some hot water with attorney generals offices in 46 states, including right here in Pennsylvania. The attorney generals say the company and its third-party retailers used deceptive and unfair sales practices.

    This includes:
    * Not fully informing customers about terms and conditions for "free" offers on their contracts.
    * Advertising prices without thoroughly explaining guidelines for rebates.
    * Violating state and federal "do not call" laws.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General, Tom Corbett, says this settlement resolves hundreds of complaints in our state, and will improve dish networks advertising and promotions in the future. This settlement requires dish network to pay restitution or other services to all customers who have valid complaints. They can go as far back as January of 2004 along with any new ones filed in the next 150 days. Pennsylvania residents can file a complaint by calling the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection hotline at 1-800-441-2555, or file an online consumer complaint at www.attorneygeneral.gov .
