A Special Note from Amy Mearkle

Amy-Mearkle072007-09-06-1189094245.jpgHello! Thanks for stopping by the WTAJ News This Morning - Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk webpage. It is my honor to serve as the Chairperson for this spirited, noncompetitive walk that helps save lives.

If it hasn't already, breast cancer will touch you or someone you know. The disease will strike more than 200,000 times this year and will claim 40,000 lives in the United States. More than 11,000 of those women will be from Pennsylvania and 2,000 of them will loose their battle with this disease.

A Call for Help!
We need your help in making a difference and building hope.  What better way to honor the many lives touched by breast cancer than by helping to raise funds for the American Cancer Society's crucial programs. Making Strides is one of only 5 walks in the state of PA.  The funds go to help people right here in our area.

It is really easy to help!! All you have to do is sign up to walk. A team can be two walkers. Call or email your friends, family members, church groups, community groups and before you know, you will have a team of people coming together to make a difference. Every dollar makes a difference.  If you raise $10 or $2,000.00, that money helps with research, education and much more.

Every year people ask me why I walk.  Every year I meet someone who has been forced to deal with this disease and I believe that we are making a difference.  Surivival rates are going up, treatments are getting better and people are paying attention and going for exams, like mammograms.  But we can't stop, there is more work to be done.

I walk for special people in my life who have battled the disease and won--their passion and determination are life lessons we should all learn from.  I walk for friends like Dr. P (the best almost mother in law I could ever ask for), Mr. D (yes--men get breast cancer too), Melissa, Denise and Sherry.  I also walk for those I call "pink ribbon angels", like Julie B. Breast cancer may have cut their lives too short, but we can honor them by stepping up to the battle against this disease.

Thanks for helping keep hope alive!
