Weather Summary

Today an upper level disturbance that brought us some rain yesterday has now pushed off to the northeast. An area of weak high pressure is pushing in. Between the two systems, it will be rather windy. Those westerly winds help to dry things out. Gust will be anywhere from 15 - 25 mph. Clouds should break at times for some sun. The best chance for some sunshine will be in the valley locations where temperatures will rebound to near 50. The high pressure will settle over the area on Saturday allowing at least for at least a mix of clouds and sunshine. A storm system will develop in the southeastern states will move up the coastline Sunday into Monday. This will bring some clouds later Sunday and the chance for showers Sunday night into Monday, but the bulk of the rainfall will once again pass to our south and east. Another front will approach the area with the chance for some showers later Tuesday into Wednesday. Behind that system, cooler air will press in for the upcoming holiday.

Snow Measuring Guidelines

Measuring Freshly Fallen SnowMeasuring snow is something that anyone with a simple ruler can do, but correctly. Before trudging out into the cold with ruler in hand, make sure you are taking the measurement in a good location.Snow is measured officially on a snowboard, which is 16" by 16". They are generally painted white so that they do not absorb as much incoming radiation from the sun. If the surface is darker, more radiation is absorbed, which will make the surface warmer. This may prevent snow from accumulating initially. The ideal location for measuring snow would be:Far away from any buildings or obstructions that would prevent snow from accumulating in that spot.On a flat surface, such as a wooden deck or a patio. Picnic tables also work well. If you have no flat wooden surfaces outside, driveways usually work well as long as they are away from cars or other obstructions. On the other hand, grassy areas make poor places to measure new snow. Snow tends to lay on top of grass, so you would likely get a reading that is a couple of inches higher than what actually fell. Battling the WindThere will be many times during the winter that while snow is falling, a fierce wind is blowing the snow around. This creates uneven piles, where some parts of the ground are almost bare while other parts see drifts a couple of feet high. So how do you battle the wind? The best ways are:Try to find an area that has not been as affected by the wind. For example, your house may have blocked the wind from one side, leaving the other side less affected. In general, the best thing to do is to measure several different places around you and then take an average. While this may seem to be less accurate, many times it is a matter of estimating how much snow fell rather than exactly how much fell when the wind is blowing.Measuring Snow DepthIt may sound like the same as measuring new snow, but the snow depth encompasses all of the old snow that is also on the ground. Say there was 8" of snow on the ground before a storm comes through, which dumps another 7" on top. The snow depth would be about 15", although it could be a bit less if the snow compacts due to the increased weight.Snow depth can be tricky because melting is a very uneven process. One side of your yard may see a lot of sun and have grass poking through, while the shady side may still have a few inches of snow left on it. The best idea is to just take an average of several different places, the same as if there is blowing snow. As was the case in measuring new snow, the best place to measure is a porch or deck (especially since most of you do not use them during the winter). If not, grass is an alternative for a good estimate, especially when there is a lot of snow on the ground.
